"After having seen the programmes and read the books, this inspiring talk has motivated me to make a fresh start - many thanks!"
"I enjoyed our sessions so much. The most important thing I've learned, was to look beyond the superficial - in everything. And to welcome change!"

MENTAL / EMOTIONAL CLUTTER

Hello everybody,
hope you had a great summer!
I just read an inspiring article about the fact that the latest psychological research suggests that we don't actually want too much choice. Everybody who has walked into a large supermarket knows: a wide choice can become bewildering. You go into a coffee shop and it's a far cry from black/white, with/without sugar...
So therefore we feel we have to become experts in everything. We are left with even more things to worry about (if we like worrying): have we made the right choice? are we knowledgeable enough? do we have the time to do the research?.... - Being forced to choose induces a stress of its own. Apparently now there is psychological evidence that if you want to be happier, reduce the choice available to you!
So guess what great idea I'm going to come up with now :-) - yes!: that's why a good old clear out feels so up-lifting! You unburden yourself of too many choices by giving away eg. the clothes you don't like anyway, making the 'what am I going to wear?' choice so much easier!
Happy clearing.
Hope to see you at the Wanstead seminars!
Birgit
PS: I've also got events coming up in Hainault, St.Johns Wood, Highgate and the Barbican. Please get in touch if you'd like to know more or book an event local to you.

MENTAL CLUTTER CLEARING

Hello everybody, hope you're enjoying the summer! This is just a quick note to remind you of an absolutely essential declutter area: the expectations we have of ourselves - that's a place crammed far too full!! Don't try and multitask yourself to sanity - kick out the inner perfectionist instead and congratulate yourself on what you have achieved so far. Sit down with a nice cup of tea and dwell on the people, events and things you're grateful for. Slow down. Shortcut to happiness: count your blessings!
And here an uplifting quote on what clutter clearing can do for you:
"As I made my way through each room of the house, I was amazed by what I found. I couldn't believe I had 'saved' so much! Each time I threw something out I imagined that I was letting go of old stuff that was keeping me stuck. And, over time, as my home became less and less cluttered, I noticed that I had more space for friends, experiences and opportunities.
I can't tell you how many times letting go of a box of old books or files led to a new business opportunity or new friendship. Decluttering my home was a yearlong process that completely changed my life. I got so used to being rewarded when I let go of things that held old energy that it became a kind of game." - Connor
Love and best wishes to all of you!

FILING!

- and here's the good news: you are NOT the only person on the planet who hasn't got a proper filing system in place. EVERYBODY has paper stuff literally all over the place!! (It seems to weirdly 'breed' all by itself somehow?!...) - So don't worry, don't waste any more time being embarrassed about it - get sorting! (Alternatively, give me a ring and I help you out.) (Yes, I am probably the only person on the planet who actually enjoys filing.... :-) - Anyway, here are some basic tips: always work from the inside out - which means, first go through all your existing folders / filing cabinets / shoe boxes and weed out the unneccessary paper bits - you will be pleasantly surprised how much that is - tons!!! Only then can you proceed to step two, and start dealing with the intray / desk / kitchen table / wherever your filing happens to live at this point in time. While you are filing, create a system that works for you: you can tell if a file doesn't work if it is either too fat (needs breaking down) - or too thin (can go in with something else). Popular categories are: bank, tax, car, utilities, contacts, health, kids, phone/s, insurance, mortgage/house/flat - have fun customising, it's your filing after all. Set up one called inspiration and stick all the pictures, recipes and photographs in it that you really love. Or even better: don't stick them in a file, but let them have a life outside, stuck on as a decorative bit on an otherwise lethally boring lever arch file for example.

Clearing tip of the day: if anything takes less than 2 minutes, DO IT NOW.
(eg. reply to an email, light a candle...)

Best wishes

SHOES!

Hello and a very good morning/afternoon/evening/whatever to you,
my fellow clutter clearing enthusiast!
The one thing everybody always wonders about, is where (on earth)
to put their shoes?? - and then ends up piling them into a heap somewhere... - but alas - here is a much funkier way to do it!
The best solution I've found by miles is at: http://www.aplaceforeverything.co.uk/ (generally a good address for storage) Look out for '5x stacking shoe drawers' (posting the direct link doesn't seem to work at the moment, sorry) - 'shoebby' are clear (self assembly) boxes with yes, drawers! so no need to pull out every single box until you get to the one you want - you just open the drawer - et voila!
I also love it how you can enjoy the sight of your wonderful shoes even if you're not wearing them... (unfortunately we can only wear one pair at a time... :-)
So, a colourful pyramid sculpture in your wardrobe - how's that!
Let me know what you think.
All the best
Birgit

CLUTTER CLEARING INSPIRATION!

You will probably agree that the problem for most of us these days is the fact that we have too many things in our lives (rather than not enough) - quite literally. How much precious time do we waste looking after objects that we do not care about in the first place? On average every one of us owns some 10 000 things, most of which we never use...

- Well, you could say, so what? But clutter causes stagnation in your life, it 'weighs you down'.

So why not treat yourself to a good clearout - and enjoy the rewards: Refresh the energy of your surroundings and yourself - out with the old and in with the new!

What is clutter?

* Things you do not use or love
* Things which are disorganised
* Anything unfinished

The clutter test - ask yourself:

Does it lift my energy when I think about it or look at it? Do I absolutely love it? Is it genuinely useful? (according to Karen Kingston, see her inspirational website: http://www.spaceclearing.com/)

How do you go about clearing?

Start with the 'easy stuff' like piles of old newspapers / magazines and gradually move on to challenging emotional clutter like presents or photographs - finally graduating to mental, emotional and spiritual clutter!

Have different boxes/bags for: charity, rubbish, returns, gifts - be inventive and come up with your own labels.

While you are clearing, be conscious what you want to invite into your life:
more friends, more peace, more abundance, a new career - whatever you wish for.

What to do with your unwanted possessions?

Give them to charity; sell them on ebay/in a car boot sale; subscribe to your local group on www.freecycle.org, an amazing website where you advertise your unwanted items for free, and someone else who can use them then comes to collect them - so you don't even have to dispose of your oldish computer/chair/large plant yourself! And someone else is happy!

If you have any questions or would like assistance with 'sorting your life out', please feel free to email: birgit@clearofclutter.com or ring me on (+44)07930983452.
Happy clearing!
